Black Fungus- Things to know about Black fungus as per common man’s perspective
Covid 19 Second wave
still not declared as it ends in India, there is the emergence of Black Fungus
cases.
Black Fungus is not seen for the first time in the second wave, it was already seen in Covid recovered patients in the First wave itself but cases were less than 100 in India but in the second wave, the cases increased approximately 10k. The question arises
“Why this was seen at an increased pace and caseload in the Second wave?”
The ANSWER lies
in various factors which are proposed by experts:
- 1. You might be knowing there was an acute shortage of Medical Oxygen Supply during mid-April and May, during these times many helping hands came forward to extend support to the medical fraternity for a Humanitarian cause to save the covid patients and there were no behind the Factory owners who use Oxygen for their work, but this Oxygen is called Industrial Oxygen which is many ways different from Medical Oxygen. Medical Oxygen is sterile whereas Industrial oxygen is not. Many hospital administrators unknowingly used this Oxygen to ventilate Covid patients that led to an increase in cases.
- Use of unsterile/ Tap
water in the humidifiers during oxygen therapy
- Hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar levels) in uncontrolled diabetes patients. As humans use Glucose as their energy source so do fungal organisms, definitely when one gets more food that "one eats lot and grows well "J lol.
Rampant use of
Steroids during covid treatment. This step also as of medical oxygen was
adopted to decrease the morbidity and mortality, and this resulted in an
axe to one’s limb.
The steroid will decrease lung damage (fibrosis in particular) but will also decrease the body’s immune system ultimately leading to an increased risk of infections.
- Irrational use of Broad-spectrum antibiotics. This lead to a decrease in good bacteria which are in symbiotic relation with humans i.e. We humans provide them with their food, in turn, they provide us protection against some infections, but with the irrational use of antibiotics, we betrayed them
- Use of unsterilized
oxygen masks including Face masks, Non-Re-Breathable Masks (NRBMs) etc.
Due to increased caseloads.
- Increased covid cases in the second wave lead to increased black fungus cases
These were factors
explained by experts as a probable reason in increased cases of Black Fungus
HOW CAN WE PREVENT IT?
In healthy Individuals
1. Avoid Contact with
decaying organic matter
2. Washing hands-on
exposure to susceptible material/thing
3. Avoiding contact with
the water-damaged buildings
4. Wearing a face mask
regularly
5. Avoid contact with
soil or manure
In COVID positives/ recovered
1. Early reporting of
symptoms like Facial Pain, Toothache and Headache, Decreased sensation over
face, Blackish discolouration of the skin and nasal discharge.
2. Strict Diabetic
control.
3. Avoiding Unnecessary
steroids, antibiotics especially against which are medical advice
4. Sterilizing facemasks
with disinfectants
5. Use clean distilled
water for humidifiers during oxygen therapy.
That’s all in this
article, In the next article, we shall provide details of Black Fungus as per
Medical perspective, so that it helps our Health science students.
